John martin state park

We had an excellent day at the resevoir! The morning was relaxed andby noon we were heading off to spend the afternoon with our neighbors and their kids on their boats. We had cooked pancakes earlier for the kids and they all chased and caught grasshoppers in the surrounding area. They spotted our first scorpion, a nice looking guy about two inches long and sort of greenish.

The area around the resivoir is pretty open land, so the wind could rip on through. There are pelicans, heron, hawks, loons, and a host of other birds here, along with fish, turtles, and the biggest snake that I didn't see, but reported in as silver in color and 5' plus in length.

Got the boats launched and spent the afternoon tubing, touring the resivoir, checking out the sandy beach areas and anchored and just floated and swam. Everyone had a ball and generally, had we all not gotten hungry, we could have stayed out all night! No storms.

Dinner, fire, shared food and continued good company. Karina went sound asleep early; I was not too far behind her. Beautiful stars, cool night air, beautiful sunrise this morning. We' pack soon and hit the road (maybe get a quick swim in), then it is on to Ordway, about 60 miles, weather looks clear, cool for the moment. We will be sorry to leave such a wonderful group of new friends behind.

  1. Hi Pete and Karina
Looks like you had a good trip across Kansas. Great post on the 95 factor. We get that 95 ,95 thing alot in summer here in Florida but you don't see too many people out biking 60 miles in it! You guys are like supper heros! I love your sprit of adventure and Karina's willingness to jump right in and make best friends with whom ever you meet and fight off the wild dogs as if it was nothing. What a great life lesson and great way to see and learn about America and the lay of the land and the people. So now you must be heading up hill. I'm trying to follow you on google earth but it's hard to figure out what roads you are taking. I know makeing posts is a challenge but if you could drop a few numbers in once in a while I'd love to "fly" with you along the roads and terrain. Are you keeping track of all this with a gps? I hope "the book" has lots of maps and pictures. My best wishes to you and Karina.

  2. Hello Pete and Karina,

Ted and Sidra told me how to find you and I just had a chance to read back a few pages of your journey. Awesome! It sounds like a spectacular trip so far and I look forward to hearing more. I hope there is a culminating slide show later on down the road (so to speak). Be well! Enjoy!

With admiration, Nicole (of Nicole and Jonathan in Hadley...remember me?).

  3. Hi you guys! It is a great trip and also a great trip!

Pete, yesterday we rode Rt 50 to Las Animas, then 194 to the Fort and on to La Junta. We'll be on 50 again today, though it is busy with traffic, has a pebbly shoulder, etc.

From Pueblo we'll circle around through a place called Westcliffe, then back onto 50 untill we get past Montrose, CO.
