What are we doing?

The two of us are helping to organize and participating in a cross country cycling  journey in order to have fun and to generate funds for the Children and Adult Mobility Project. Our ride, on recumbent tricycles (sponsored by Ti Trikes), will begin on June 14th and before we are finished, sometime in late August (@22nd), we will have logged in the neighborhood of 4,000 miles (or 400,000 calories, but who is counting?!). Destination is San Francisco, but along the way we'll be visiting places like Ithaca, Niagara Falls, Bloomington, IN, several VA hospitals, a whole bunch of bike stores, grocery stores, 10+ different states, and hopefully a national park or two (or five).

What is a recumbent Trike?

Well, not quite this!

In my earlier days I spent a lot of time touring on bicycles - lots. But, the last major ride I did was over ten years back, so I am overdue! Karina has done some good bike rides, some great hikes and camping, and she's almost 13!

The idea of making a trans America journey came up the first time when Karina was only 5, it went into a list scheduling it for when she turned 14. The opportunity came one year early, but we'll be ready come June 14!

We both have a bunch of training to do to get ready. We start in at the gym this Sunday (I'm buying tylenol on Saturday)!

Day 2 - getting ready

OK, so we are beginning to organize details. Routes, sponsors, underwriters and donors. And here I thought all we would have to do is ride our bikes! Oh, did I mention that we are not riding bikes? In order to make things even more interesting (and to spare the part where my backside goes numb), we will be riding recumbent trikes!

These new trikes are being produced by Ti Trikes, a great new company in CT. The frames are titanium, tons of great new features including a new front wheel drive (ie, much shorter chain!).  We won't actually be getting the trikes until later in the Spring, but they will be new, and gorgeous, and worth the wait!

In the meantime it is off to the gym for the general conditioning and tune up. We have a way to go (trust me, I really do have a way to go!)
